A lot of people are insect magnets, and you could be one of those. If you have a lawn, most likely, insects will be present in that area. In addition, insects like mosquitos, flies, or moths are commonly seen in your garden or patio, which are very annoying when you want to enjoy brunch or some barbeque out with your company. Fortunately, there are a lot of plants out there that can repel insects.

Each plant is unique and has natural properties that emit different chemical substances. Like how the snake plant is famous for its purifying abilities, some plants are also common for repelling insects. For example, flowers are not only pleasing to the eyes but are also fragrant for us. However, insects don’t usually find it delightful.

Lavender to Repel Insects

Lavender has been used as a fragrance to homes and clothes drawers for centuries. You might even have a lavender-scented candle to keep you calm and relaxed and at the same time repel insects. Fortunately, while this is relaxing, lavender actually repels insects such as mosquitos, flies, fleas, and moths. Also, it was claimed that lavender could also hinder mosquitos’ sense of smell!

To prepare it, place a tied bouquet in your home to help keep flies and mosquitos away. However, you can also use lavender essential oil, which is more effective.

Citronella grass is well-known for its distinct smell. Therefore, this plant is a very common component as a natural ingredient in mosquito repellents. The living plant is also the most effective repellent for pests. While this plant is low maintenance, it cannot withstand cold climates. However, it thrives in warm environments where you can plant it in a sunny area.

Mint

While mint has been known to be a popular ingredient in food and beverages, mint is also a helpful plant to cast away mosquitos, flies, and other bugs. Mint can grow like weeds, so it’s best to plant it on a pot and put it on your patio where you can reach it easily if you want to add some to your afternoon tea. The stronger the scent, the fewer bugs there will be.
